Ethan Isaac Beckwith-Cohen

Choreographer, Performer, Teacher, Director

Biography:

Ethan Isaac Beckwith-Cohen is a Choreographer, Performer, and Teaching Artist, currently dancing with the Garth Fagan Dance Company. Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Ethan trained at Rochester's School of the Arts, Garth Fagan Dance, Borinquen Dance Theatre, FuturPointe Dance, and a plethora of Rochester dance organizations. Ethan holds a BFA in Dance from The University of the Arts, where (under the direction of Donna Faye Burchfeild) he has had the opportunity to work with artists such as Sidra Bell, Doug Varone, Tommie-Waheed Evans, Sara Procopio, Kim Bares-Bailey, Daniel Madoff, Mark Caserta, Katie Swords Thurman, Curt Haworth, Paul Matteson, Shayla-Vie Jenkins, Elisa Clark, Andrea Weaber and many others. Over the last decade Ethan has choreographed over two dozen works, curated multiple evenings of dance, and produced community based projects in collaboration with local artists.

In 2019, Ethan founded SacatheniaDance, a dance project dedicated to exploring unique ways that dance can be used as a catalyst for human expression. SacatheniaDance has produced multiple events and performed at various festivals and spaces around the Rochester and Philadelphia area.

As a teacher, his classes are a product of his training: heavily influenced by modern techniques such as Fagan and Horton, with a flare of contemporary and various folkloric dance forms. Ethan is focused on finding the intersection where artistry meets athleticism. Where one can stretch and strengthen not only the body, but also one's understanding of personal potential.

Ethan began his professional career with Garth Fagan Dance in 2022.

Artist Statement:

“I believe that dance is itself a language capable of transmitting emotions, memories, and mythologies. My work is dedicated to exploring unique ways dance can be used as a catalyst for human expression through choreography, performance, and creative practices. I search for the essence of things. My goal isn't to create work attempting to replicate the exactness of anything, but to create an environment that surrounds it. Rather than my work being about , my work aims to create an atmosphere that feels like . I present these “essences” using the physical vocabularies passed down to me by my teachers and redefined by my own personal practices.”
